On behalf of the Center for Social Anthropology at VMU, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lithuania, and the President Valdas Adamkus Library in Kaunas, we warmly invite you to an open memorial lecture honoring the memory of esteemed Norwegian anthropologist Professor Thomas Hylland Eriksen (1962–2024).The lecture will be delivered by Assoc. Prof. Hege Høyer Leivestad, long-time colleague of Prof. Eriksen at the University of Oslo, Department of Social Anthropology.In her talk titled „A Visit to Boomtown: The Clashing Scales of Globalization“, Dr. Leivestad will reflect on Eriksen’s influential academic contributions and enduring legacy. His groundbreaking work on ethnicity, identity, nationalism, globalization, and environmental studies shaped anthropological thinking and public debate in Norway and beyond.
In recent years, Prof. Eriksen examined the tension between growth and sustainability, conceptualized as the clashing scales of the globalized world. Drawing on his ethnographic studies of the Australian industrial town of Gladstone, Dr. Leivestad will explore how these ideas help us understand the key challenges of our time.Prof. Eriksen visited Lithuania three times – first in 2009 at the University of Klaipėda, and last in 2018 at Vytautas Magnus University, where he led a graduate workshop. His inspiring presence left a lasting impression on the Lithuanian academic community.This lecture is part of the Scandinavian Days program in Kaunas and a tribute to Eriksen’s remarkable legacy in Lithuania and beyond.The lecture will be held in English.
